End Button On Mac

It’s a relatively small difference among the many contrasts between Macs and PCs, but two things Mac keyboards lack that have always been found on PC keyboards are Home and End keys. These two keys can be used to jump to the beginning or end of a page.

With a Mac keyboard, there are two keyboard shortcuts that provide Home and End key functionality.

Well, there is an END key on any Mac keyboard. How you execute it is just a matter of what type of keyboard layout is being used. It may require a combination such as fn +Right Arrow, for example. That keystroke, however, moves the insertion point to the end of the current line- which isn't necessarily coincident with the end of a sentence. In this video we show you different function key shortcuts for your Mac keyboard. These are useful if you don't have the end, home, page up/down, and delete.

Fn + left and right arrow keys

Press the Function key and the right arrow key to jump to the end of a page, and Function and left arrow to jump to the top of a page.

Home: Fn and Left arrow.

End: Fn and Right arrow.

Just hold the Fn key down and use the Left and Right arrow keys to replicate the Home and End keys. It’s also worth noting that using Up and Down keys replicate the Page Up and Page Down keys on a PC keyboard.

This keyboard shortcut works on most non-editable and some editable pages. It works, for example, with the new Photos app and iTunes, along with Chrome, Firefox and Safari. It also works when editing a document in LibreOffice but not when you are editing a page in Google Drive.

I’ve been using Mac OS X daily since 2001 when I purchased my Titanium PowerBook and I still can’t get used the home and end key behavior.

If, like me, you want Home to send you to the start of the line and not to the top of the document then create a file called DefaultKeyBinding.dict in your ~/Library/KeyBindings folder (might need to create that folder too) with the following contents:

This remapping does the following in most Mac apps including Chrome (some apps do their own key handling):

  • Home and End will go to start and end of line
  • ShiftHome and ShiftEnd will select to start and end of line
  • CtrlHome and CtrlEnd will go to start and end of document
  • ShiftCtrlHome and ShiftCtrlEnd will select to start and end of document

Note that you will need to reboot after creating this file for it to take effect.
