This is the home page of the Macintosh OS X Port of David Firth's Fantastic Atari 800 Emulator. I have ported the SDL version of the Atrari800 emulator to Mac OS X, and added a full native Cocoa interface, including Preferences, Menus, File Associations, Help and more.

- Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel) Windows NT/2000/XP BeOS R4 (PowerPC and Intel) AmigaOS 3.x Some features of Basilisk II. Emulates either a Mac Classic (which runs MacOS 0.x thru 7.5) or a Mac II series machine (which runs MacOS 7.x, 8.0 and 8.1), depending on the ROM being used Color video display CD quality sound output.
The simulated machine is a PDP-8/E with 4K words of memory and optionally aKM8-E Memory Extension (with up to 32K words of memory) and aKE8-E Extended Arithmetic Element.I/O devices are implemented as plug-in modules, and the simulator containsplug-ins for an ASR 33 Console Teletype, an ASR 33 Auxiliary Teletype,a PC8-E High Speed Paper Tape Reader and Punch,a RK8-E Disk Cartridge System,a TC08 DECtape Systemand various Real Time Clocks.
There is also a KC8-EA Programmer's Console plug-in enabling the user to operate the simulator(nearly) like a hardware PDP-8/E, including single step execution on memory cycle level.
Furthermore, the simulator has a plug-in for the TSC8-75 board so that the emulatedPDP-8/E can run the ETOS time sharing operating system.
The simulator provides a comfortable user interface for running, writingand debugging PDP-8 software. For each device, there is a separate windowwhich displays the internal state of the device. The user can view andedit the PDP-8 memory content as octal dump, assembler instructions andtyped data (ASCII, integer, floating point,...).
Other features of thesimulator are breakpoints, break opcodes, single step execution, a tracemode for the PDP-8/E and much more. The emulated ASR 33 Teletypes provideall comfort of Macintosh text editor windows and optionally produce the soundof hardware typewriters.
Benchmarksshow that the PDP-8/E Simulator outperforms a hardware PDP-8/E in orders ofmagnitude when running on reasonable current Macs. There are optionsto slow down the CPU and the I/O devices to the speed of the real hardware. The simulator passes all of the most importantMAINDEC hardware diagnosticsfor the PDP-8/E.
The plug-in API is included with the download, as well as a Memory Content demo plug-in thatgraphically shows the PDP-8/E memory content of the running machine. So you can implement your own plug-ins and PDP-8/E devices using Xcodeand Objective-C or Swift.
PDP-8/E Simulator 2.3.b runs on Macs with OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” or better and fully supports Dark Mode.It is a Cocoa reimplementation of the version 1.x for the “classic” Mac OSthat was first released in 1994.This version in turn is based on the PDP-8/E emulator of Bill Haygood(out-dated version from 1993).All three emulators use the same well-proven PDP-8/E emulation engine.
The simulator package includes some PDP-8 software, e. g. a complete OS/8system, FOCAL-8 and Pascal-S, an EduSystem 25 DECtape and aPAL-8 compatible cross-assembler.There are tutorials for a quick start with thePDP-8/E Simulator and for operating theKC8-EA Programmer’s Console.
For older Macs, there is still PDP-8/E Simulator 1.5.1 available that runs on68K-, PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs with System 2.0.1 toMac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard”.The screenshot at the left shows the simulator simultaneously running onMac OS X 10.2 “Jaguar” and on a Mac Plus with System 2.0.1.The Mac Plus “Mr. T” is emulated byMini vMac.
This is the quick start for PDP-8/E Simulator 1.x.
Note that PDP-8/E Simulator 1.x and the I/O devices can completely be controlled using AppleScript.

This is the most current version of PDP-8/E Simulator. The download includes all binaries, some PDP-8 software, the plug-in API and the source code for the simulator:- PDP-8/E Simulator 2.3.b
(The PDP-8/E Simulator is not signed or notarized by Apple. When you open theapplication for the first time, you are warned that it can’t be opened becauseit is not from the App Store or the developer cannot be verified. To open it anyway, right-click on the application icon and use“Open” from the context menu. When you want to use the additionalplug-ins from the “PDP-8/E Simulator PlugIns“ folder, the same warning occurs when the PDP-8/E Simulator tries to load the plug-ins.To fix this problem, use a Terminal window and execute the command“xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /path/to/plugins/*.pdp8Plugin”.Replace /path/to/plugins with the concrete path of your plug-in folder,e. g. by dragging the folder to the Terminal window to insert the path.)

Mac Os 8 App

Step back in time with a virtual Mac running OS 8, complete with apps of the day, and favorite features like WindowShade and 3D folder icons.
Get it while you can. While we’re all looking forward to macOS Big Sur, developer Felix Rieseberg has instead looked back three decades to revive Mac OS 8. We’re also looking forward to Apple Silicon but he’s taking us to a time before Intel and even before PowerPC.
“Bear in mind that this is written entirely in JavaScript, so please adjust your expectations,” he writes on Github, where the emulator can currently be downloaded. “The virtual machine is emulating a 1991 Macintosh Quadra 900 with a Motorola CPU, which Apple used before switching to IBM’s PowerPC architecture in the late 1990s.”
Mac Os 10.6 Full Version
The Mac OS 8 macintosh.js app itself is by Rieseberg, but it runs through the Basilisk II 68k Macintosh emulator. Reiseberg’s app can be downloaded complete, though, without a separate install of Basilisk II, and run from the regular Applications folder.
It is of absolutely no practical use whatsoever, but that doesn’t matter in the slightest. Launching it, you’re immediately back to the 1990s with Apple’s then-new, now-so-painfully-old design aesthetic.
That includes the much missed “Welcome to Mac OS,” and it includes System 8’s somewhat less missed marching row of extensions. At least none of these clash and mean you long for the days of Conflict Catcher.
The Mac emulator’s screen is stubbornly tiny on a modern Mac screen. And as you use it, you get a little disorientating conflict between your real Mac’s cursor and your new virtual Mac’s one. It can take some getting used to just where to click to open folders and applications, but you can do it — and there are apps to open.
It really works, too.
Reportedly thanks to “an old MacWorld Demo CD from 1997,” the emulator includes Photoshop 3, Illustrator 5.5 and the forgotten old standby, Stuffit Expander. All of them work, within any limitations on their original demos, and you can use them with modern Mac files.
While AppleInsider couldn’t get this to work in testing, reportedly you can drop files into the emulator’s folder and they will appear in Mac OS 8 after restarting the app. Similarly, if you still have classic Mac disk images, those should be mountable here.
What you can’t do is see how the internet was back then, even though Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer are included. “For what it’s worth, the web was quite different 30 years ago – and you wouldn’t be able to open even Google,” notes Rieseberg.

It’s not the oldest window back into Mac history, though. In 2017, an online emulator was released which presented the full System 7.0.1. Neither that nor the new Mac OS 8 one are supported or even condoned by Apple, though.

So you can no more be sure it will escape lawyers than you can do any serious work in it. But it’s a clear labor of love and such a joyous treat to run on today’s hardware.
